oh hai, livejournal.

it is the saturday before thanksgiving of my sophomore year of college. I am supposed to be writing a paper about film criticism. my cat is asleep at the end of my bed.

things with Micah continue to be impossibly wonderful. we met over a year ago. oh my god. so much has happened in a year.

my classes are great, if occasionally depressing (sociology, philosophy - more later). I made a video project! (http://pages.emerson.edu/students/arielle_evans) my life is crazy and busy and challenging.

I have two jobs - I work as an usher at the cutler majestic theatre, and I am hired at the urban outfitters that is opening in allston in december.

Micah got into college (suffolk)! today we went to an open house at emmanuel, which is his top choice. he hasn't heard back from them yet.

David Foster Wallace was fucking great. I wish I could read his books for the rest of my life. luckily, it will probably take me at least six months to read Infinite Jest.

I am almost a vegetarian, and I no longer buy milk. this has a lot more to do with the meat industry's impact on the environment than animal cruelty.

sociology makes me feel like all of the choices I make are not conscious, but rather a result of my environment and my upbringing.
philosophy reminds me that the present and future of this country are far from acceptable, and that the nature of the system seems to be to push the country in the wrong direction; and also that the catholic paradigm for morality is disturbing.

things I'm obsessed with right now. [Sunday
May 10, 2009 | 12:33pm |]
A. Real Dolls - life size, silicon sex dolls. About $7000 each. Three "entries" for men's pleasure. Jesus, what a fascinating subculture. And what an interesting psychological and emotional commentary. How do the ethics of real dolls compare to prostitution and rape? Why do many guys have seven instead of just one?

Here's the website (be warned - there are naked doll photos abound) - http://www.realdoll.com/
Here's a documentary - http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3710987618964917848
Here's one guy's personal website - http://www.dollcoffeeshop.com/

B. Craigslist - nothing new, but I continually find really strange and wonderful little corners of this site (e.g. last night - tennis postings, see my facebook). Missed connections is always there if you're feeling sappy. And casual encounters is AMAZING, because for whatever reason, all men who post there think that the best way to attract a woman on the internet is to post several pictures of their erect penis, and none of their face.

C. Limewire - unfortunately.

http://limewire.com/

D. Trader Joe's - really cheap prices, organic/natural/ethical food. Always busy, but only because it is so awesome. Convieniently open until 10pm every night. Plus, you'll feel like you live on a commune, because the only avaliable brand is "Trader Joe's" brand (or, if you're feeling playfully racist - "Trader Ming's" for asian stuff, "Trader Jose's" for mexican, "Trader Giotto's" for italian, etc., etc.).

http://traderjoes.com/

E. Boston Public Library - screw the book store, the Emerson library, and the movie rental place. The BPL is where it's at. Sweet website, prompt request response, and notifications by email. Also: FREE FREE FREE.

http://bpl.org/

F. Nima Nourizadeh - he directs super cool music videos. His name is impossible to pronounce.

http://www.nimanourizadeh.com/site/

G. Settlers of Catan - sweetest board game ever. Now, all Micah and I need is a friend or two to play it with. German-designed, different every time, amazing.

Here's a very well-written article about it - http://www.wired.com/gaming/gamingreviews/magazine/17-04/mf_settlers

H. Regina Spektor - hooray for Limewire.

please listen to but DO NOT WATCH (it is lame) this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cryjgChC2WE&feature=related

Alex Farese, you changed spring forever. I know now that for the rest of my life, those first few weeks of spring will be infused and thick with thoughts of you. I'm grateful because I have a sincere hope that one spring I won't feel like crying and instead I will only experience the joy of your memory.

THE BEST FML: Today, I went on a date with a guy for the first time. We went to Starbucks and got coffee. We talked for awhile, and we weere joking and having a good time. Suddenly, he put his hand on my stomach and said, "soon, this will be plump with my seed." FML.

a few thoughts (from wikipedia) [Friday
March 27, 2009 | 12:33am |]
"As of January 20, 2009, the total U.S. federal debt was $10.627 trillion (an increase of 85.5 percent over the previous eight years)."

"In February 2009, the unemployment rate was 8.1%. Female unemployment continued to be significantly lower than male unemployment at 6.7%. Black unemployment continues to be much higher than white unemployment almost double at 13.4% compared to 7.3% white unemployment. It was only recently that the unemployment rate increased steadily. Unemployment rates have not been this high since August 1992."
